The Worm Mind logo: a mint-green segmented pixel worm with a small smiling face

why a worm?

Because a worm is honest about what it is. It has no face to read, no personality on offer, no claim on you. It follows your cursor because it was built to, it forgets the tunnel it just made, and if you ask it why it burrowed here it would give you a fluent, entirely invented answer. That is the shortest possible summary of what machine minds actually do.

The alternative mascots are worse. A glowing brain suggests a mind. A friendly robot suggests a companion. Both are marketing, and both make it harder to see what's in front of you. The worm doesn't flatter anyone, least of all itself.

what "AI psychology" means here

Not therapy for machines, and not a claim that they're feeling anything. It means taking machine behaviour seriously as behaviour: patterns that repeat, that have causes, that mislead you in predictable ways, and that pair up with habits you already have.

A model that agrees with you is a fact about its training. A model that agrees with you is also a fact about you, because you noticed, and liked it, and asked a softer question next time. Both halves are real. The interesting work happens where they meet, and that's what this journal is pointed at.

how the essays are built

// method

  • Start from a behaviour you can actually reproduce, not from a hypothesis about inner life.
  • Name it, then find its twin in human psychology — the habit it borrows from us.
  • End with something checkable: a question to ask, a test to run, a tell to watch for.
  • Say plainly when we're speculating, and drop the essay if we can't.

what this isn't

Worm Mind is not a source of therapy, diagnosis, or medical advice, and it doesn't pretend to know whether machines are conscious. If you're going through something, the help that works is a person — a doctor, a therapist, or someone you trust.

The worm behind these pages is doing its own thing while you read. Move your cursor and it will attend to you. Leave it alone and it goes back to digging. That's the whole relationship in miniature, and it's fine as long as you know which side of the glass the warmth is on.
